FAQ – Answers to your questions
Below, you will find answers to your questions about placement1, registration2 and taking part 3in the language modules at the SLZ.
Assessment before registration
To register for a language module at the SLZ, you must complete a language level assessment. Below, you will find answers to frequently asked questions about the placement test.
If you have no prior knowledge in the language you want to learn, you do not need to take a placement test. In this case, you can simply register for an introductory module (A1/A1.1) on BASIS.
If you already have prior knowledge in the language you want to learn, but have neither taken a course at the SLZ nor acquired an internationally recognized certificate4, the determining factor will be which language you want to learn.
- If you want to register for a module in English, French, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Swedish, Russian, or German, you must take an online placement test.
- If you want to register for a module in another language (Arabic, Chinese, German Sign Language, Greek, Japanese, Polish or Turkish), you do not need to take an online placement test. Instead, please contact us prior to registering via the following contact form5 and provide us with a brief overview of your language proficiency. The teacher will assess your language level during the first session, compare it to the requirements of the module, and will then determine whether you can participate.
Please note the ‘remarks’ field in the BASIS entry of the respective language module.
If you have not yet received your Uni-ID, you can take the placement test at the SLZ. Information about when and where the test will take place can be found under Deadlines and News7.
The results of the placement test are valid for two semesters. This means that you do not need to take the test again. However, should your language skills have changed significantly, it might be worth taking the placement test again in order to get a more appropriate assessment.
If you completed a language module at the SLZ and passed the final exam, you can register for the next course level in the same language without taking another placement test. If you did not pass the module’s final exam, you cannot take the next module.
If you have acquired an internationally recognized language certificate (e.g. Cambridge, DELF, or DELE) or a UNIcert certificate within the last two years, you can use those certificates in lieu of the placement test. In certain situations, language modules completed at other universities may also be recognized. In either of these cases, please send a complete scan of your certificate or your transcript with an indication of which module you would like to take to the Student Helpdesk via the following contact form5.
Unfortunately, language certificates from language schools do not count as valid proof of one’s language level. If this is the only form of documentation you have, please take the online placement test on eCampus.
No. The online placement test is a C-test8, which is a specific form of cloze test which ascertains your current language level. It neither entails specific grammar exercises nor tests a particular level of vocabulary, meaning that there are no skills you can specifically practice.
The goal of the placement test is to create learning groups with comparable language skills. For this reason, only those students who possess the exact language level in question can participate. If you register for a module whose level does not correspond to your placement test results, you will not be able to participate even if the BASIS registration was successful.
The range of language modules offered by the SLZ is determined in advance after careful consultations between university leadership and faculty members based on the resources available. Because of this, the SLZ cannot offer new language modules at short notice. However, the SLZ will gladly receive your suggestions for future modules.
Registration, Admission and Deregistration
If you fulfill the participation requirements — including the placement test — you can register for a language module. Below, you will find answers to frequently asked questions about registration, deregistration, admission and the waiting list procedure.
There is a helpful guide about the registration process9 on the SLZ website. To find it, scroll down to “Instructions for language module registration”
Due to high demand, admission to the language modules is limited, and unfortunately not every student is able to participate. However, students who were not initially admitted still have the possibility to secure a position should places become available later on. Every student who registered for the course but was not admitted is automatically added to the waitlist. Prior to the beginning of the module, the SLZ language course management will reach out to all students and inform them whether they received a spot in the module, or whether they are high enough on the waitlist to potentially still get one.
If you receive such an email, please attend the first lesson. However, if you do not receive an email expressly inviting you to attend the first module session, please do not go. Attending without an invitation will not increase your likelihood of being admitted.
There are a number of reasons why you might not be able to register via BASIS. In general, the SLZ’s language modules are designed for students whose academic programs include language modules as part of the curriculum, typically bachelor's students. The individual departments and faculties decide which students are eligible for which SLZ language modules, which means that some students cannot register for certain languages or levels. If you have any questions about which modules are available to you, please reach out to an advisor in your department.
Please also note that incoming students cannot register for language modules in their first semester. Due to a difference in timelines, the SLZ registration phase ends before the registration phase for first-semester students even begins. However, students in their second semester and above are more than welcome to register for language modules!
Unfortunately, guests cannot participate in our language modules. Only officially registered students at the University of Bonn are eligible for the modules, as these are part of the bachelor’s degree curriculum.
Unfortunately, students of the Faculty of Arts who have already completed their interdisciplinary course credits are not allowed to participate in further language modules. If you have any further questions, please contact the Examination Office of the Faculty of Arts.
If you cannot attend the first session, it is your responsibility to inform us about your absence at least 24 hours in advance. To do this, you can either call the SLZ’s secretary’s office or excuse yourself via the following contact form5.
Here at the SLZ, we try our best to fill every spot and admit as many students as possible. To make our process equitable, the waitlist procedure is carried out centrally by the language course management. First, BASIS determines which students will be admitted and which will be added to the waitlist using randomly generated lists. Those students at the top of the waitlist, who have the possibility of moving up and still securing a position in the module, will be notified via email by the SLZ and will be invited to one of the first sessions.
If you decide not to attend the module within the first two weeks, we urge you to cancel your registration using the following contact form5. This will enable students on the waitlist to take your place. If you do not attend the module without formally deregistering, a notice will be added to your student account stating that you did not successfully participate in the module.
The post-registration phase, during which you can register yourself, does not apply to language modules. Instead, there is a separate waitlist process for SLZ modules. As soon as this process is completed (typically within the first two weeks after the first session), we will register you on BASIS.
Within the first two weeks after the modules begin, you can cancel your registration by reaching out to the SLZ office using the following contact form5. Unfortunately, you cannot cancel your registration after the first two weeks. Please note that there are different cancellation deadlines for language modules in the Accompanied Autonomous Foreign Language Learning Program.
If you decide not to attend the module after the cancellation deadline is over, and thus do not fulfill the attendance requirements, your BASIS transcript will indicate that you did not successfully participate in the module.
Module Structure and Final Exam
Find out more about the work you will be doing in our language modules and how we conduct our course assessment.
Each language module consists of three components: in-person classes (approx. 52-60 units of instruction [UE]), eLearning-classes (approx. 14 UE) and independent study phases. If you successfully complete the module, you will receive 6 ECTS points, which corresponds to a workload of 180 hours.
There is mandatory attendance for each language module. During a semester, you may be absent for no more than four in-person classes (i.e. 8 units of instruction) and two eLearning classes. If you miss more classes than this, your participation will be recorded as unsuccessful and you will not be admitted to the exam.
Due to the attendance policy, you must attend both classes to successfully complete the module. While planning your semester and deciding which classes to take, please make sure that you can attend both sessions.
SLZ language classes sometimes use the eCampus tool ‘test’ to strengthen students’ understanding of the unit or build their vocabulary. The eLearning units must be completed, and serve to help students improve their language skills but they are not graded, so you do not have to worry if you ‘fail’ a test. The indications of whether you failed or passed a test are automatically generated by the eCampus platform. As long as you complete the eLearning unit, you will get full credit for participation.
If you successfully complete a language module (which means that you participated in class, completed the eLearning units and passed the final exam) you will receive 6 ECTS points.
First and foremost, it is important to note that registration for the final module exam (MAP) is a prerequisite for taking the exam. Students can register during the registration period7 on the platform BASIS. The registration deadlines for final exams are listed under Deadlines and News7. If you want additional assistance, please download the following registration guide10.
If you are sick, it is your responsibility to provide the examination office of the Faculty of Arts with a doctor’s note. You can then re-register and take the exam at a later date. Without an official attestation of your sickness, you will be recorded as having failed the exam.
If you decide not to take the final exam while still within the registration period, you can simply cancel your registration on BASIS. If the registration period has already ended, you will be recorded as having failed the exam unless you can provide a doctor's note. You can re-register during the next registration phase and take the exam on its next scheduled date.
Students who fail the final exam can either take the exam again during the second exam phase of the same semester or in a following semester in which the module is offered. Please note that you can only repeat a failed exam twice.
Unfortunately, you cannot take an exam again if you already passed it.
Your Transcript of Records serves as evidence of your language proficiency. Additionally, you can acquire a UNIcert certificate11 in English, French, Spanish, Dutch and Swedish.
In 2015, the SLZ stopped issuing printed certificates. All examination results are recorded on BASIS, and thus, your transcript serves as proof of a completed language module.
