Accompanied Autonomous Foreign Language Learning at the SLZ

In addition to its numerous regular language modules1, the SLZ also enables students to learn foreign languages, or deepen their already existing language proficiencies, through independent studies with professional support. These so-called Accompanied Autonomous Foreign Language Learning Opportunities (BAFL) are both individual and cooperative, and incorporate analog and digital forms of learning.

Independent Learning

Do you want to study a language independently while being supported by the SLZ?

At the SLZ, you can learn English, French, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish and Spanish autonomously but with support.

eTandem

Want to improve your language skills together with a native speaker? With eTandem, you can deepen your language proficiency online.

Here at the SLZ, you can learn English, French, Italian and Spanish from the comfort of your home using the eTandem method, starting at the A2 level.

Tandem

With the tandem model, you can improve your skills in the language of your choice with a native speaker in Bonn!

At the SLZ, you can learn English, French, Italian and Spanish starting at the A2 level in the tandem model.

Independent and Cooperative Learning Methods

Students interested in our Accompanied Autonomous Foreign Language offers can choose from three different sub-programs. The independent learning program2 enables students of varying language levels to learn a foreign language autonomously and on their own schedule. To support these students, the SLZ provides them with practical language exercises, seminars, advisory meetings, as well as analog and digital self-study materials. Students also have the option to seek more direct guidance. In the extracurricular programs eTandem3 and Tandem4, students have the opportunity to develop their language skills in an interactive environment, by talking with native speakers at partner universities or in Bonn.

Language Learning Software Rosetta Stone at the University of Bonn

The University of Bonn grants its students and employees free access to the digital language learning platform Rosetta Stone. This innovative program enables students to decide for themselves when, where, and at what pace they want to learn a new language, or deepen their pre-existing knowledge. Boasting over 20 languages, Rosetta Stone enables both novices and advanced learners to delve deeper into language learning from the comfort of their own homes.

All you have to do is access the site on your computer, or download the app on your tablet or smartphone.

Project 'Accompanied Autonomous Foreign Language Learning’

The SLZ’s self-study offers were developed as part of the ‘Accompanied Autonomous Foreign Language Learning’ (BAFL) project. Up until March 2021, the initiative was funded by the federal-state program Quality Pact for Teaching (QPL)6 as part of the project “Together for better Quality in Study and Teaching”. Since 2021, the Bonn Center for Higher Education (BZH)7 has been responsible for BAFL, supported by the Department of Intercultural Communication and Multilingualism Research with Language Learning Center.
