Language Modules
Currently, the SLZ offers general and subject-specific modules in 16 different languages. These modules cover both standard and scientific language, and are offered for a variety of different experience levels. All modules, which are competency- and action-oriented (for more, read through the SLZ’s teaching concept1), follow a blended learning format and consist of five weekly lesson units. Typically, four lesson units require in-class attendance, while one lesson unit is conducted as eLearning (6 ECTS total). Furthermore, a multitude of language modules offer students the opportunity to acquire nationally accredited UNIcert certificates2.
In offering these language modules, the SLZ is pursuing the University’s linguistic-political goal 3of promoting multilingualism as a valuable asset for students and professionals. By improving their language skills, students can develop an individual multilingual profile, which will help them achieve their academic goals, prepare them for diverse professional environments, and generally enhance their ability to participate in cultural exchange.
Mandatory Placement Tests During Registration
Please take into consideration that all language modules, except A1-level courses (no prior knowledge required), require interested participants to take a language level assessment. Please complete this ahead of time. You can find more information about the procedure and exceptions in the registration information4.
German for Academic Purposes for international students at the Language Learning Center
You have already passed a university language exam (e.g. DSH or TestDaF) and are now looking for a semester-long German course to help you master the language skills needed for your studies?
Here at the SLZ, we offer all international students enrolled in German-language degree programs interactive and action-oriented German modules that emphasize academic language at the B2.2, C1.1 and C1.2 levels.
The focus of our German modules is preparing students for university-specific content and language skills: we emphasize writing academic texts (such as notes, excerpts, protocols, term papers or theses) as well as oral communication in university environments (class participation, presentations, examination situations).
Our modules are taught in a blended learning format. Twice a week, students will attend 90-minute lectures, and once a week, they will meet in 45 minute eLearning groups consisting of no more than 25 students. Upon the successful completion of the final exam, students will receive 6 ECTS. If you are interested in our language modules and want to find out which one is right for you, please take our placement test!
The International Office offers semester-long German courses for enrolled international students (without DSH), doctoral students, visiting academics and employees.
