FAQs
Prospective Students
You can find more information on the department website.
The SKGM and DaZ/DaF programs are only offered following the two-subject model format. In principal, you can select any other course of the same format if it is within the Faculty of Arts. The only exception to this rule is that the “Language and Communication in the Globalized Media Society” and “German as a Second and Foreign Language” programs cannot be combined with one another.
To see all possible options, please read through our list of possible combinations.
For SKGM, we often recommend combining the course with the subjects of Media Studies, Politics, South Asian Studies, as well as with English-, French-, German-, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, since these subjects have very harmonious contents. The same counts for DaZ/DaF: we especially recommend a combination with English-, French-, German-, Hispanic, and Italian Studies.
The bachelor's programs DaZ/DaF and SKGM are subject to admission restrictions following the numerus clausus procedure. Applications for the first semester (i.e., the winter semester) must be submitted to the Student Registry by July 15th of any given year. You can find further information about the admissions process here. If you have any questions about your application, please contact the Student Registry or the Central Study Advisory Committee. After receiving notice of the outcome of your application, you can address any further questions to the Student Registry.
The numerus clausus has no defined value, but is determined anew each year during the admissions process. Based on the applicants, and their relative GPAs, the required numerus clausus is established. Due to the variability in numerus clausus, the previous years’ results should not be taken as an absolute indicator of the required numerus clausus, but rather as a guideline. In any case, they should not prevent you from submitting an application!
You can find all information about applications for international students here.
Given the objectives of the program, English-language courses in DaZ/DaF would not be appropriate. Modules in the “Language and Communication in the Globalized Media Society” program are not typically offered in English, either. However, you can search for courses in different languages using the university’s electronic course catalog (eVV), “BASIS”.
Please arrange a consultation with Dr. Erika Linz. Based on your transcript, she can determine whether your examination results will be recognized, and inform you about further steps. You can find more information about the application process for higher semesters here.
New Students
On our institute website, there is a wealth of information that can help ease your transition to studying at the University of Bonn. Additionally, the Faculty of Arts developed a preparatory course program which can further prepare you for your first semester.
To familiarize yourself with the structure of the degree program, please read the module guidebook and the recommended study plans yourself. Afterwards, if you still have any questions, please contact your academic advisor or degree coordinator.
No, purchasing all the books on the reading list is not necessary. Most of them are available in our departmental library, or in the main library (ULB). You can search for specific books using the following link: www.ulb.uni-bonn.de
Current Students
Please contact BASIS support. This is the most efficient way to determine the cause, and resolve the issue.
Grades are posted immediately after your professor, or the department, evaluates your exam. If the regular assessment period for your examination results has already passed without your grade being posted, or should you notice that your fellow students have received their grades while you haven’t, please contact the department IKM’s BASIS-Support to clarify the cause. The easiest way to do this is to use BASIS support.
You can find all the necessary information about examination procedures and regulations on the Examination Office’s website. Please also take into account departmental, subject-specific requirements while writing the paper. Do not hesitate to reach out to your professors if you have any further questions.
You can find the exact requirements for your internships and the internship report in the SKGM or DaZ/DaF degree program internship guides. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact our internship coordinator, Dr. P. Meyermann.
Our institute website contains all the information you need about studying abroad. There, you can find a detailed overview of the individual steps for your semester abroad - from the initial consultation, through the creation of a learning agreement and the recognition of your coursework abroad. Furthermore, the website lists Institute IX’s points of contact.
All questions relating to the bachelor’s thesis, such as “How much time do I have?”, “Who can supervise my bachelor’s thesis?”, and “When and where can I register?”, are regulated in the examination regulations. Please be aware that the answers to these questions are legally binding, and cannot be changed or adjusted. Additionally, you can find an explanatory handout from the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Arts with important registration information here.
Every student is unique, and your ultimate employment opportunities will depend on the specific course combination you selected while pursuing your bachelor’s degree. Thus, we are only able to offer you general information about the fields many of our graduates enter. For DaZ/DaF, you can find that information here, and for SKGM, please click here.
